After years of predictions that Virtual Reality (VR) was not commercially viable, the technology has made a surging comeback and is the darling of venture capitalists and experience-hungry consumers alike. VR is here to stay. Over the past couple of years at SIGGRAPH conferences, we have seen VR grow and mature at an incredible speed. One of the ways VR has progressed significantly is in its ability to display real-time graphics comparable to those of any other segment of the computer graphics industry.
At SIGGRAPH 2016, Real-Time Live! is a must-see extravaganza that highlights the most innovative work in real-time graphics, immersive experiences, and interactive techniques – all packaged into a diverse and fast-paced evening event. Content is presented live onstage and showcases the latest trends and techniques for pushing the boundaries of interactive visuals. The event culminates in the awarding of the “Best of Real-Time Graphics and Interactivity” prize. In the past, the Real-Time Live! program has supported all uses of computer graphics in real-time, including VR, but it has had a specific VR competition, the Immersive Realities contest, that was created to help grow the VR industry.
Drumroll please! This year, Real-Time Live! will feature a new format and will no longer include the Immersive Realities contest. We believe that VR technology has “grown up,” and grown into an evolved and more sophisticated technology that is ready to compete face-to-face with other real-time graphics industries. This year all submissions will participate in the main competition of “Best of Real-Time Graphics and Interactivity.”
If you are working on real-time graphics, we strongly encourage you to submit your work to Real-Time Live! Submissions will be accepted until Tuesday, 5 April 22:00 UTC/GMT.
Take your career to the next level at SIGGRAPH 2016 and Real-Time Live! We are looking forward to who will be crowned the new “Ruler of Real-Time Graphics” after Epic Games took home the prize in 2015 with their piece “Pushing Photorealism in A Boy and His Kite.”
See you in Anaheim 24-28 July, 2016!
