A combination of classic hand-drawn animation and the latest innovations of virtual reality bring us director Bruce Wright’s “a kite’s tale” from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Throughout the week, SIGGRAPH 2019 attendees have the chance to experience the exclusive premiere of this Disney Short Circuit production in the renowned VR Theater. The film tells a tale of two kites: a playful puppy (with a wagging tail) and a pompous dragon. The kites clash, tangle, and ultimately must learn to live with one another subject to the winds of fate in this delightful experience that combines classic and modern tech.

The work will be presented among several other debut and cutting-edge immersive experiences at SIGGRAPH 2019, fitting right in with the other innovations on display.

“I’m thrilled that ‘a kite’s tale’ is premiering at SIGGRAPH 2019’s VR Theater,” said Wright. “Virtual reality has the ability to bring us into new worlds of story, and touch the hearts of the audience in never-before-dreamt-of ways. It’s an honor to showcase our film at SIGGRAPH for the innovators and artists who are shaping the future of this medium.”

This isn’t the first time Disney has premiered a short film at SIGGRAPH. “Cycles,” the studios first VR short, debuted last summer at SIGGRAPH 2018 and both films are part of the 20 shorts created since Disney launched its innovative Short Circuit program. Short Circuit is a chance for anyone within the studio to participate in a blind submission and be selected for the opportunity to direct their short film idea.
