The SIGGRAPH 2017 Technical Papers program is the premier international forum for disseminating new scholarly research in computer graphics and interactive techniques. At the conference, authors provide brief overviews of their work during the Technical Papers Fast Forward session. Groupings of papers are then presented during in 22-minute sessions that include three minutes of Q&A. All technical papers are also published as a special issue of ACM Transactions on Graphics (TOG).

You can access the full list of accepted technical papers on the SIGGRAPH 2017 website and below are just a few highlights of the research revelations coming out of this year’s program:

Inside Fluids: Clebsch Maps for Visualization and Processing (pictured above)
Authors: Albert Chern, California Institute of Technology; Felix Knöppel and Ulrich Pinkall, Technische Universität Berlin; Peter Schröder, California Institute of Technology
Clebsch maps encode vector fields, such as those coming from fluid simulations, in the form of a function that encapsulates information about the field in an easily accessible manner. For example, vortex lines and tubes can be found by iso-contouring. This paper provides an algorithm for finding such maps.

Multi-Species Simulation of Porous Sand and Water Mixtures

Multi-Species Simulation of Porous Sand and Water Mixtures
Authors: Andre Pradhana Tampubolon and Theodore Gast, University of California, Los Angeles;  Gergely Klár, DreamWorks Animation; Chuyuan Fu, University of California, Los Angeles ; Joseph Teran, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Disney Research, University of California, Los Angeles; Chenfanfu Jiang, University of California, Los Angeles; Ken Museth, DreamWorks Animation

This multi-species model for simulation of gravity-driven landslides and debris flows with porous sand and water interactions uses the material point method and mixture theory to describe individual phases coupled through a momentum exchange term. Read more about this paper on Gizmodo.

Robust eXtended Finite Elements for Complex Cutting of Deformables

Robust eXtended Finite Elements for Complex Cutting of Deformables
Authors: Dan Koschier and Jan Bender, RWTH Aachen University; Nils Thuerey, Technical University of Munich

This novel approach, based on the XFEM, simulates complex cutting of three-dimensional deformable solids. It also introduces a quadrature-rule construction for accurate integration over discontinuous polynomials and a preconditioning approach that allows robust simulation of fine-structural cutting using fully implicit time integration.

Phase-Functioned Neural Networks for Character Control

Phase-Functioned Neural Networks for Character Control
Authors: Daniel Holden, University of Edinburgh; Taku Komura, University of Edinburgh; and, Jun Saito, Method Studios

This paper proposes a real-time character control mechanism using a novel phase-functioned neural network that can learn how humans move through complex terrains while avoiding obstacles. Read more about this paper on TechCrunch.

Anisotropic Elastoplasticity for Cloth, Knit and Hair Frictional Contact

Anisotropic Elastoplasticity for Cloth, Knit and Hair Frictional Contact
Authors: Chenfanfu Jiang, University of Pennsylvania; Theodore Gast, University of California, Los Angeles; Joseph Teran, Walt Disney Animation Studios, University of California, Los Angeles

In this anisotropic constitutive model for simulating cloth, knit, and hair frictional contact, the model is discretized with the Material Point Method and a novel update of the deformation gradient. Collision-intensive scenarios with up to one million degrees of freedom run in less than 30 seconds per frame.
