The 9th ACM SIGGRAPH Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Asia will take place in Macao, China at The Venetian Macao from 5 – 8 December 2016.
SIGGRAPH Asia is an annual event that attracts more than 6,000 people from over 50 countries that represent the most respected technical and creative people in the graphics business and academic community. They attend to experience a 4-Day showcase of research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education and emerging technologies. Companies such as DJI, Facebook, Forum8, Fyusion, Google, Lenovo, Lytro and Pixar are participating.
Themed “Key to the Future”, one of the main content components of SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 this year is Virtual Reality, also known as immersive multimedia, virtual environment (VE) or computer-simulated life. SIGGRAPH Asia 2016 will debut a Virtual Reality (VR) Showcase that will enable attendees to delve deep into digital worlds and to test state-of-the-art technologies. The keynote speakers for the conference will also discuss this topic. Paul Debevec, a senior staff engineer at Google VR will deliver a keynote address, Achieving Photoreal Virtual Humans in Movies, Games and Virtual Reality; and Brian Cabral, Director of Engineering at Facebook, whose keynote is entitled VR Capture: Designing and Building an Open Source 3D-360 Video Camera.
The market for virtual reality is rapidly burgeoning. Deloitte Global predicted that virtual reality (VR) will have its first billion-dollar year in 2016, comprising $700 million in hardware sales and the balance from content. Bloomberg reported in January that Goldman Sachs predicts the virtual reality market will be worth $80 billion by 2025. While videogames, live events and entertainment represent nearly half of the market share, applications for virtual reality are being embedded in a wide range of traditional industries including engineering, education, healthcare, the military, real estate and retail.
Hongbo Fu, SIGGRAPH Asia’s Conference Chair and Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong says,
“The newly introduced VR showcase aims to take delegates into unbelievable, immersive virtual worlds. SIGGRAPH Asia has always been the platform that brings academia and professionals together, and we hope that attendees will use this opportunity to explore, learn, experience and get connected, virtually and physically!”
