On Monday, 29 July, and Wednesday, 31 July, SIGGRAPH 2024 participants gathered in the Bluebird Ballroom of the Colorado Convention Center for this year’s Electronic Theater. Monday’s showing was the first of two ticketed live showings at SIGGRAPH 2024. The Electronic Theater also offered a virtual option, allowing animation enthusiasts to view from anywhere in the world. There’s still time to purchase your virtual ticket to experience excellence in animation.
Introductions and Awards
Ready to be a casteller? The Electronic Theater opened with a team-building pre-show modeled on the Catalan tradition of castells, or human towers. Each section of the ballroom participated in teams to build their collective castles while calibration tracked their arm movement. It was a friendly competition that ended with Shay D. Pixel, SIGGRAPH’s fan-favorite mascot, taking the stage to unite the crowd.
On Monday night, the SIGGRAPH 2024 Electronic Theater Award winners were called to the stage to accept their prestigious awards. And on Thursday morning, the Audience Choice recipient was announced. Congratulations to this year’s esteemed awardees:
- Best in Show — “The Art of Weightlessness”
- Moshe Mahler, Carnegie Mellon University
- Jury’s Choice — “Patterns”
- Alex Glawion
- Best Student Project – “After Grandpa”
- Juliette Michel, Swann Valenza, Florian Gomes Freitas, Axel Sence, and Victoria Leviaux, Ecole MoPA
- Audience Choice — “LUKI & the Lights”
- Toby Cochran
Now Into the Show
What a show! From the start, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees were glued to the big screen, ready to be inspired by groundbreaking animations. The diverse lineup included stories like a passenger’s train journey, transformative origami, Loup overcoming his fears in “Après Papi,” and the evolution of crutches in a man’s life to fit his needs. These 21 short films evoked a wide range of emotions — joy, determination, fear, and sadness — showcasing the richness of animation. Beyond entertainment, the Electronic Theater provided a platform to admire the future of computer graphics and interactive techniques. SIGGRAPH 2024 created a special moment for participants to appreciate these cutting-edge innovations, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
