One of the benefits that isn’t mentioned above is the wonderful, long-term friends you will make. We don’t get to hang out much since we’re scattered all over the world, but the friends I made when I was a student volunteer have helped me improve my work, have collaborated on projects, and been great fun! As I get older, we still keep in touch, providing recommendations on everything from jobs and tutorials, to great restaurants when I travel. I am so glad I volunteered, it is so much fun and such a great environment – I recommend it every year to the students I work with and wish I was still able to do it myself!

This blog post puts it in a nutshell! All of these benefits are things I have seen first hand over my time as a student volunteer.

One big thing not mentioned is the experience itself and what it does for you in terms of personal development; when you think about it, the SIGGRAPH SV experience reflects what you’ll go through in the real world. You will have to work in a team, you will have to responsibly and promptly tackle tasks given, you will have to face stressful situations and play a part in solving them. Veterans of the SIGGRAPH SV program have these three qualities in spades.

Working as a team of 300+ volunteers gives you practical experience in teamwork and problem-solving that you simply can’t gain without that hands-on approach. On top of that, being a part of the SV program is one of those moments when the final product results in something greater than the sum of its individual pieces, one of which was you. And that, my friends, is definitely something of which we all want to be a part.
